In 2007 when the New York Times asked him: "How do you keep hatred in check?" his answer was dismissive. "Hating clouds the mind." answered Nelson Mandela. "It gets in the way of strategy. Leaders can not afford to hate."

This extraordinary man treated his wrongdoers with compassion and forgiveness. From the apartheid era of brutality, fear and humiliation, he led the transition to freedom and democracy.

One of the great stories of the 20th century is the struggle for human rights, and this is a central part of that story.

A magnifiscent man who truly lived his principles, Nobel Peace Prize Winner and former President of South Africa Nelson Mandela will be remembered for his leadership, his humanity, his humility, his humor, his courage, his compassion, his dignity and his ability to convert enemies to friends.

May his legacy serve to inspire and reignite all of our efforts on the global journey toward peace and freedom.
