Simple, Energy-Efficient, and Extremely Bountiful!

Think you don't have a green thumb? The folks at Portable Farms will prove you wrong with their simple and incredibly productive aquaponics system. They produce onsite food facilities to raise fish and plants in almost any climate due to their innovative system, which is a blend between hydroponics (growing plants in water) and aquaculture (fish farming).

Portable Farms produce an incredible amount of food. a 100 x 100 foot unit can produce enough lettuce to create 400 side salads per day and 500 fillets (each 4 ounces) for every two week period. There are many other vegetables that can be grown in portable farms. Kale, tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, and peppers are just a few of the 300 types of plants successfully grown.

You don't need any special training to run one of these bountiful facilities; the design is very simple. You feed the fish, the waste from the fish nourishes the plants, and the water continuously cycles through the system. This method uses 90% less water than your average backyard garden and the system can be run on solar or wind power. The units can be used in any environment with a light source (natural or artificial) that will stay above freezing.

Colle Davis, the creator, sees Portable Farms being assembled on rooftops, empty lots, and even underground. The company is working with 120 countries and also with military facilities, schools, and prisons. His vision is to bring a great, reliable food source into areas that are struggling with food shortages and malnutrition. Yet another example of very simple technology creating huge change!
