Using 50% Less Chemical Fertilizer

Bio-char has miracle properties that may be key to revitalizing depleted soil all over the world.

Bio-char is one of the most exciting developments in science today. A fine-grained charcoal high in organic carbon, and largely resistant to decomposition, it is an ancient method of enhancing soil fertility and carbon sequestration. It helps the soil retain water and increase crop yields. It enhances microbiological activity. It retains nutrients for plants that would otherwise be lost to the atmosphere, or washed away by rains.

This could represent a key strategy in breaking the cycle of slash and burn farming, and restore our soil.

Char-amended soils have shown 50-80% reductions in nitrous oxide emissions and reduced runoff of phosphorus into surface waters and leaching of nitrogen into groundwater.

In this video, Indian farmers tell CNN that the bio-char amended soil has such excellent yields that they now spend 50% less on chemical fertilizers.

Unlike other organic material that can be added to the soil, bio char remains for long periods, offering the opportunity to sequester the carbon.

In this way it is actually carbon - negative. Bio-char REMOVES carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

Now we're talking!
