Eat Oysters In Restuarants, Feed Local Reefs

Enjoy dinner, help the environment. That's the idea behind an unusual conservation project in the Florida Panhandle.

This project began with volunteers collecting 80 tons of oyster shells from the Pensacola area restaurants for use in restoring oyster reefs at Bayou Texar.

Oyster reefs serve as a habitat not only for oysters but also for about 300 aquatic species who use the reefs as some sort of habitat.

The reefs also help in filtration of storm water run off in the bayou.

Hoorah for this group of people, putting the oyster shells back where they belong!
