Here's an interesting bit of dialogue that reveals that, if nothing else, the writers for Star Trek believe the human race will be beyond all material yearnings in 300 years.

Captain Picard declares that we have outgrown our infancy. "We've eliminated hunger, want, the NEED for possessions."

The more developed civilization of the future has higher goals, like working on ourselves, instead of working for things.

Let's hope this futuristic vision comes to pass even if those fancy spaceships don't quite make it!
