Organic bee keeper Jacqueline Freeman shares her wisdom here about why the epidemic of colony collapse disorder that became so prevalent around 2006 did not affect the organic apairies.

Colony collapse disorder is a phenomenon in which worker bees from a beehive or European honey bee colony abruptly disappear.

The numbers were around 40% bee loss for the conventional hives and only around 5% for the organic ones.

She outlines 12 Things To Prevent Colony Collapse Disorder. As you can imagine, they run counter to how the business is usually run. For example, feed bees honey- not sugar water. And not any old honey from the supermarket, because that may contain spore in it for some of the diseases that bees are susceptible to.

And why the insecticide to get rid of bee mites? Bees are insects too!

"Instead of thinking about what we are going to attack and kill, think about what we can do to make the bees stronger." she says wisely.
