Rejoice!

Large biotech companies like Syngenta, Monsanto, Pioneer, Dow and BASF have long been experimenting with GMO crops and seeds in Hawaii. They have farms on Oahu, Kauai and Molokai, but they've never operated on Hawaii's Big Island -- and now they never will.

Mayor Billy Kenoi signed Bill 113 into law in November of 2013. The ordinance bans new genetically engineered crops from being grown on the Big Island, and bans farmers from growing any new genetically altered crops.

Below is an excerp from the Mayor's message to the to the Hawai'i County Council:

"Our community has a deep connection and respect for our land, and we all understand we must protect our island and preserve our precious natural resources. We are determined to do what is right for the land because this place is unlike any other in the world. With this new ordinance we are conveying that instead of global agribusiness corporations, we want to encourage and support community-based farming and ranching."

Hooray!
