80% Of Waste Diverted From Landfill

In the United States these days, we are averaging 4 lbs of garbage per person per day. Tragically, that is the amount that is sent to landfills in most of the country.

Not in San Francisco! In 2009 they instituted laws for residents and businesses, stating that all organic materials must be composted and recycling is mandatory.

This has meant that 80% of the waste stream has been diverted from the landfill. The national recycling average is just 35%.

See the enormous municipal compost heap, where 400 tons of scraps come in per day!

San Francisco is setting their sights on zero waste in the future. What are we waiting for?
