A Truly Self Sustaining Home

This video offers a fantastic summary of the benefits of the eco homes known as "Earthships"

Earthship architect, visionary and genius Michael Reynolds discovered back in the 70's that soda cans, bottles and old tires make for powerful and durable insulation when filled with dirt.

He has devoted his life to creating Earthships, truly revolutionary and sustainable homes. These structures incorporate passive solar and are made of natural and recycled materials. Earthships are generally off-the-grid homes, minimizing their reliance on public utilities and fossil fuels, and they're built to utilize the available local resources, especially energy from the sun.

"Why build with trees when you can use tires? asks Reynolds.

All the water needed is harvested from the sky. No wells needed! Sewage is contained and treated on site. Shower water goes to water the plants and then to flush the toilet.

The thick, dense inner walls provide thermal mass that naturally regulates the interior temperature during both cold and hot seasons. You can grow fruits and vegetables inside.

"Once you've lived in an earthship you would never go back to a regular house" says owner Chris Litze.

You can even grow a banana tree inside!
