Permaculture: A Transformation In Thinking

Toby Hemenway is the author of Gaia’s Garden: A Guide to Home-Scale Permaculture, one of the best-selling permaculture books in the world.

This is the sequel to Toby's popular talk, "How Permaculture Can Save Humanity and The Planet, but not Civilization" also found here in the Permaculture category on Nextworldtv.

This talk also provides an incredible history lesson, and here he goes beyond agriculture. It's a very comprehensive and fascinating lecture about how we can reconnect our towns and communities, transform our relationship with nature, and create a culture based on abundance instead of scarcity.

One sacred tenet of permaculture is that surplus is created when systems are in harmony, and he explains how we can, in fact, "redesign civilization" around this principle.

It's a brilliant and inspiring talk, addressing changes that are possible in everything from agriculture to local economies. He outlines regenerative, fair ways to provide food, energy and livelihoods.

Plenty of inspiring examples of initiatives, especially in dense urban areas, indicate that we are indeed going in the right direction. Communities pulling together and identifying as smaller scale villages within cities are an example. Pavements are giving way to community gardens, compost stations are starting to appear and fences are coming down!
